A Behind the Scenes Look at Being a Beautycounter Consultant

A Behind the Scenes Look at Being a Beautycounter Consultant

Today is my third anniversary as a Beautycounter consultant, so I thought I’d take you behind the scenes a bit and tell you all about how being a consultant works, and why I still love it 🙂

In my opinion, the advocacy work of Beautycounter is what sets them apart from so many other companies. Gregg Renfew, the founder and CEO, had a long business background that she turned towards safer beauty after learning about climate change through the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth and the intersection between the environment and the health impacts of chemical ingredients in products we use everyday. This podcast interview with Gregg is excellent for a deeper dive! She discovered that the regulation of the personal care product industry has been largely stagnant since the 1930s and that the government has given little to no authority to any agency to combat unethical, unsafe, or dangerous practices by personal care product companies.

It also has not encouraged its science and health-focused agencies to investigate the safety of the ingredients in personal care products. With that in mind, Gregg set out to found Beautycounter with advocacy as a core pillar to change the regulatory landscape of personal care products and consultants to help share how her company was different, something that would be unlikely to come across with a product simply sitting on a shelf in a store.

I was never a big makeup and skin care person but as I neared 30, I decided to start taking better care of my skin, so why not get my products from a company that also supported advocacy and health as part of their founding mission? I joined as a consultant about six months after my first purchase since I was already sharing about the company (and products) to anyone who would listen. Here are my answers to some of the most common questions I am asked about being a consultant and what I think sets Beautycounter apart!

A Lipstick for Every Occasion

A Lipstick for Every Occasion

I have no idea how I came to own six tubes of lipstick…until last year, the only lip color I used regularly was a Clinique lipstick in black honey. A friend in college introduced me to it, so I was going on about 8 years with the same lip color. And other than that, I used Burt’s Bee’s. Pretty simple, but also a little boring.

As I was thinking of upgrading my makeup routine for a more polished look, I decided it was time to make lipstick part of my daily look. But even for the occasional lipstick wearer, you can’t go wrong with Beautycounter’s Sheer Lipstick or Color Intense Lipstick. With more than 20 shades between the two, there’s one for every skin tone and occasion! I’m wearing my new favorite shade Orchid in this picture!

My Skincare Routine

My Skincare Routine

I’ve had more than a few messages asking about my skincare and makeup routines, so I figured it was time to write up a post! I was not much of a product maven before finding Beautycounter, but now that I’ve been using Beautycounter for almost a year I’ve had the opportunity to try out different products and find the best ones for my skin. You can also check out my makeup routine here.

I have drier skin with no skin problems (i.e. acne, eczema) but if you need something for a specific condition, email me at mollyb.beautycounter@gmail.com and I can help you out! Beautycounter has four different skincare collections — Countermatch, Rejuvenating, Countercontrol, and Counterman, which is formulated for men’s skin needs. No matter what type of skin you have, don’t forget SUNSCREEN! Even the FDA (who hardly regulates this industry, thus why Beautycounter’s mission is awesome!!) is on the mineral sunscreen train these days. Mineral sunscreens (like Beautycounter’s!) are not only better for YOU, they’re healthier for the ocean and reefs too!

My Daily Makeup Routine

My Daily Makeup Routine

I’ve had more than a few requests for this post, so here you go: my daily makeup routine and a few other favorite products! Before switching to Beautycounter, I was using products from a few different brands. Not only are Beautycounter’s products safer and about the same price point as what I was using before, the quality is so much better. Seriously.

You can also check out my skincare routine here.

The best way to get a bang for your buck is the Flawless in Five bundle. It’s six products that you can apply in under five minutes and be on your way looking fabulous.

The Real Reason I Became a Beautycounter Consultant

The Real Reason I Became a Beautycounter Consultant

I’ve been sitting on this post for a few months now and wasn’t sure I wanted to publish it. If you follow me on social media, you’ve seen me talk about Beautycounter and my side hustle as a consultant. I was unsure about posting it here because I try to keep this space focused on health policy and medical school. But then I realized that those parts of my life are exactly WHY I joined Beautycounter in the first place. So today, I’m going to let you in on why I really became a Beautycounter consultant and why I love it!

In all honestly, I never gave much thought to my skincare or makeup — I didn’t learn how to wear makeup until college and my idea of skincare until recently was taking off my makeup with a remover wipe at night. But as I’m approaching the big 3-0 this year, I decided it was time to be more proactive and take care of my, admittedly, pretty great skin (#thanksgenetics). I want it to look this good years down the road!

I had no idea what products I needed and I’ve always felt overwhelmed by the department store counters and Sephora. I start sneezing thanks to the perfume and then have no idea if something is good quality or worth the cost. So when a blogger I’d been reading for years mentioned that she was a Beautycounter consultant, I was intrigued. She shared a lot of concerning facts about the personal care product industry that spoke to my public health and almost-a-medical-student heart.

The Alarming Truth about the Personal Care Product Industry
